Announcements — January 3, 2010

REMEMBER IN PRAYER:  Judy Hanna, recovering from surgery; Heather Danner Ulrich and Jeanann Grundy, undergoing treatment for cancer;  Marty Jones, with cancer;  Ann Luce and Chuck Perkins, undergoing treatment;  Bill Stremke, serving in the military in Afghanistan.
BLANKET/QUILT DRIVE  Now is a good time to clean out your closets and find a good use for those blankets, quilts, comforters, etc., that no longer see much use.  We need them for padding to protect the new pews during loading and transit.  We will need at least 100.  If you would rather make a loan to us, be sure to label your items with duct tape.  All donated blankets, etc. will be re-donated to the Carthage Crisis Center to give to those in need.
2010 OFFERING ENVELOPES  The 2010 offering envelopes are ready to be picked up.  If you do not see your name and want envelopes, please contact the church office.  Likewise, if you prefer not to use them and see your name, simply write NO on the label.  Please remember to discard your 2009 envelopes and use only the 2010 envelopes beginning today.
LWML  The first meeting of 2010 will be this Wednesday evening at 6:30.  This will be a planning and scheduling meeting, so we need everyone’s input.  All ladies of the congregation are invited.
NEW BIBLE STUDY  In this time in our world’s history, it is vitally important to know God’s truth.  There is a new Bible study starting called The Truth Project.  This is a dynamic look at what the Bible tells us (which is the truth) compared to the world’s view (which is often a lie).  It is a twelve week program which will include a DVD lesson and discussion.  There is no cost.  The program was developed by Focus on the Family and you can find information, DVD clips and more on the website: thetruthproject.org.  This study is open to anyone.  Invite friends and co-workers to join us.  We will meet each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 12th in the Fellowship Hall.  A sign up sheet is located in the narthex.  You may contact Lora Samuelson, 793-0556, for more information.

FLOWER CHART, 2010  If you would like to place flowers at the altar for a special occasion or in memory of someone, please sign the flower chart found on the wall in the hall between the restrooms.  Simply write your name, phone number, and occasion with the pen provided.

BLOOD PRESSURE  The opportunity to have your blood pressure taken and recorded after each service is available in the nurse’s office located off the narthex.  You will be given a card to carry with you to record your readings.
TAPES OF THE SERVICE  Audio tapes of the service are available after the 8:15 am service each Sunday.  They are located in the glassed-door cabinet in the narthex.  Tapes of the previous Sunday are also available.
ASSISTIVE LISTENING  If you are having a hard time hearing the service, assistive listening devices are available from the ushers.  They work like a transistor radio and you can control the volume.
THE LUTHERAN WITNESS  If you would like to subscribe to, or renew a subscription to, The Lutheran Witness, please use the sign-up sheet at the Information Center in the narthex.  The annual cost is $15.00.  Please designate  “Lutheran Witness” if placing your payment in the offering plate.  The 2010 subscription year begins in April.

THE NEW YEAR’S EVE Communion Service is Thursday evening, Dec. 31st, at 7:00 pm. The service will include a memorial for those who were called to their eternal home this past year.

WEDNESDAY EVENING SCHEDULE There will be no Wednesday classes this week. The Wednesday evening schedule will resume on Wednesday, January 6th, with band practice at 5:30 pm and Jr. Confirmation, Youth Group, and Men’s Ensemble at 6:30 pm. The LWML will be meeting Jan.6th at 6:30 pm, and the Women’s Class will resume its classes on Jan. 13th at 6:30 pm.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all who remembered me on my birthday. You don’t know what it meant to me to receive so many cards and good wishes. You are all so wonderful! ~ Dorothy F.

PEW TRANSFER HELP NEEDED Volunteers are needed to travel to Pleasant Hill, MO, on Friday, January 8th-9th, to dismantle and load our church pews onto a semi-trailer to be transported to Carthage and then unloaded on the 9th. Please contact John N., if you are willing to assist with this. The more the merrier. If you’d like to help, but can’t make the trip on Friday, helpers will also be needed to move & store the existing pews, if they haven’t sold, and assist with re-assembling the new pews here at church.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM  Today, during the 10:45 service, the Sunday School children will recount the beautiful story of the birth of the Christ Child with their program, The Christmas Story.

CHRISTMAS TREAT  After the program this morning, there will be a bag of “goodies” for the children as they leave the sanctuary.   

SPECIAL DECEMBER SERVICES
  Christmas Eve Communion Candlelight Service is Thursday, Dec. 24th, at    7:00 pm.
  Christmas Day Communion Service is Friday at 10:45 am.
  New Year’s Eve Communion Service, Dec. 31st, at 7:00 pm.

LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES OUTREACH BOOKLETS  Please check out the new assortment of Lutheran Hour Booklets located in the narthex.  There is a variety of topics for personal use or to give out to family, friends, and co-workers, that points us all to Christ and his endless love, no matter what the situation my be.  A booklet entitled, How to Share Christ Confidently, is also available.  Let Your Light Shine, and Reach Out!

JOY COMES IN PAIRS  In light of the necessities of life, walking barefoot may seem minor, but for millions of children around the world their bare feet are subjected to infections that can lead to crippling consequences, disease and even death.  The Sunday School offerings, now through the end of the year, will go to help purchase and send pairs of clog type, all-terrain shoes to children in need worldwide.  This project is a division of Life Outreach International.

ADVENT  Our last special midweek Advent service will be this Wednesday at 7:00 pm.  Be sure to make this special service a part of your Christmas preparation and celebration.
MARRIED  We wish Keith Zoromski and Stephanie Cole God’s blessings. They were married yesterday here at Good Shepherd.  May their love for each other grow in Christ as they share life together as husband and wife. 

THE CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM will be next Sunday during the 10:45 morning worship service.  The Sunday School children will tell, The Christmas Story, the beautiful story of Jesus’ birth in a way only they can.  Practices for the program are during the Sunday School hour.

POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS  It is that time again to place our order for the poinsettias that help beautify our church at Christmas.  The cost will be $5.00 each, and as always, you are welcome to take the plants home with you after Christmas.  Use the sign up sheet in the narthex, and please make payment to Betty K.

PRESERVING THE BEAUTY  We ask that you help us to preserve and maintain our facility, such as closely monitoring snacks given to children in the sanctuary, being careful not to mar or scratch the floors when moving tables and chairs, keeping food in the kitchen or Fellowship Hall, and seeing that your disposable cups, glasses, etc. are empty before you put them in the trash.  Together, we can preserve the beauty of our church, the Fellowship Hall and classrooms.  Thank you for helping us keep our church clean.
